Dr Sandy Hetherington joined Magdalen College in October 2017 as the George Grosvenor Freeman Fellow by Examination in Sciences. He is a botanist whose research focuses on the evolution of land plants. The aim of Sandy’s current research is to uncover the origin and early diversification of plant roots – an organ whose origins made profound changes to the terrestrial landscape and was also essential for plants to evolve the tree life habit.
Dr Antone Martinho-Truswell joined the College as Fellow by Examination in October 2016. He is a zoologist whose research focuses on perception and intelligence in birds. His current projects include explorations of concept learning in newly hatched ducklings and the learning abilities of yet-unhatched baby birds. He has worked with pigeons, New Caledonian Crows, &c., and seeks to understand how animal, human, and artificial minds work.
